The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) regularly collaborates with community members to provide direction for implementing data-related policies. Here, we present the process used by an ESIP cluster to align data repository practices with the CARE principles, and to produce guidelines for repositories to meet the CARE Principles in conjunction with other frameworks such as the FAIR and TRUST Principles. The tenets of the CARE Principles are each being considered in terms of the feasibility of their implementation within a data repository system. Such considerations include balancing existing repository activities with the needs of scientists, data producers, data users, and other stake and rights holders.
