The Evolving Landscape of Data Management and Stewardship at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP)

As science and data have become digital, expectations are increasing around making research data and software open and accessible. Funding agencies and publishing houses are pushing cultural changes around making data and metadata available. Datasets and the software that makes them are increasingly seen as scientific contributions on their own merits, worthy of attribution, citation, and reward for high quality. And there is an increasingly greater expectation of access to software, with a grand vision of being able to reproduce scientific processes and analyses. Toward this end, LASP is building resources and tools to infuse modern data management and stewardship into its processes. We are constructing a new wiki space to house documentation that will keep scientists abreast of best practices, in addition to housing a repository of past data management plans (DMPs). Development of the third version of the LaTiS functional data model continues, which promises to facilitate data interoperability and unique access capabilities. Development and evangelization of the LASP Extended Metadata Repository (LEMR) continues, which promises to unify metadata usage across the laboratory. And lastly, we are developing a new metadata ontology that will make LEMR more workable for everyone and will facilitate cross-walking information to other standards for improved reproducibility.
