Increasing the Impact of the Smithsonian’s Geoscience Collections

Plenary presentation from day 2 of the 2019 ESIP Summer Meeting in Tacoma, WA providing a high-level overview of the rock, mineral, and meteorite collections held by the Department of Mineral Sciences, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. The presentation describes how metrics for use of the collections can be generated and how the IGSN and text mining of the scientific literature can be used to keep track of where and how Smithsonian specimens are being used.
