The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information has developed a Data Stewardship Maturity Questionnaire (DSMQ) in support of the NOAA OneStop Project as an intuitive way to quickly assess stewardship maturity of individual digital environmental datasets. Built on the Data Stewardship Maturity Matrix, the DSMQ presents data managers and domain subject matter experts with a novel way of assessing their datasets that fit uniquely into upcoming data and metadata archiving workflows. The development of this enterprise tool involved several prototypes and internal user testing. This poster outlines the evolution of the DSMQ from a binary yes/no survey to a sophisticated multiple choice arrangement with several thousand individually-scored, possible answer combinations and present some of the challenges that were faced and the solutions that were implemented to solve them. This poster was presented at the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Winter Meeting in January 2019.
