Date: June 21st, 2019

Time: 1:00 - 2:00 pm ET

Location: GoToMeeting

Water planners and managers want their decisions to be based on the best available information. Yet, too often, there is a lack of two-way dialogue between suppliers of scientific information (e.g., researchers) and potential users of scientific information (e.g., water utilities) that creates barriers and can lead to inappropriate uses. This presentation by Dr. Julie Vano promotes a conversation on how we might overcome these barriers. Dr. Vano will share details about newly released guidance on Dos and Don’ts for using climate information for water resources planning and management and highlight several complementary efforts, done in partnership with decision makers, to share information and foster engagement to improve climate resilience. This is the fourth webinar in the ESIP 2019 Webinar Series ‘Data to Action: Increasing the Use and Value of Earth Science Data and Information.’

Contributors

Dr. Julie Vano is a project scientist in the Hydrometeorological Applications Program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Her current work aims to better connect climate science and the water management community and use these connections to develop innovative ways to address climate impacts on local water resources. For the past four years she has helped lead a growing “science to action” grassroots coalition within the American Geophysical Union (AGU) that is focused on fostering better engagement between scientists and decision-makers, and as of this year is the President-Elect of AGU’s Societal Impacts and Policy Sciences section. She holds an M.S. in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin and a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Washington.
